This week's Wonderwoman is a rare find in her industry: Anne Boden.

Starting out with a graduate program at Lloyds after having studied computer science and chemistry, she was seen as "too ambitious". It proved to be difficult to provide her with a mentor as she was just one of a kind and had her own style and problem-solving mindset.

After three decades in the industry with an impressive portfolio of well-known financial institutions such as Lloyds, Standard Chartered, ABN Amro, Royal Bank of Scotland and Allied Irish Banks, she seized an opportunity to launch a new bank operated from a smartphone - an idea that very audacious at the time.

In her 50's, Boden founded Starling - Best British Bank winner in 2021 which is built to give people a fairer, smarter and more human alternative to heavyweight incumbents. Starling evolves around the customer using Banking-as-a-Service model. The female founder highlights the team effort of building an app from scratch to help customers manage their finances in real-time. Her vision is to improve banking for all and to build Starling into a global brand.

“I launched Starling because I wanted to offer people a fairer, smarter and more human alternative to the banks of the past. We have achieved this by giving our customers world-class technology in the palm of their hand and 24/7 customer service, allowing them to feel supported wherever they are, and whatever their financial needs.”

Nowadays, Boden sits on the board of UK Finance and is an adviser to the Board of Trade.

We chose her as she exemplifies all the leadership qualities that women can and do bring to tomorrow's world of finance. She has a firm belief in the ability of women to succeed in tech and finance.
